Who am I and why am I Here?
I'm Joe Scherrman owner of DreamCatcher Production LLC. I've been associated with the family business, Scherrman's Implement & Appliance and Scherrman's Implement, since the early 1970's. We have five generations of Scherrmans working this, sales and service, corporation.
Over the years of promoting our business, Dyersville and North East Iowa, I realized I had my own dream to fulfill and a lot of stories to tell.
I have over thirty years in the family business and in helping promote the Dyersville area and Eastern Iowa. What you might not know is that I have a dream to fulfill and a lot of stories to tell.
The one way I know how to tell stories is through film. The first award winning film I made was in 1971 called "A Dream is What You Make of It." Since then, family and the family business took up most of my time. Other than the occasional video taping of parades, sporting events and some school plays, my career in storytelling was put on hold.
The Ghost Players
After the movie Field of Dreams, which is located 3 miles from my house, I heard about a bunch of my friends entertaining people at the movie site. Off I went, video taping the mad cap episodes of the Ghost Players interacting with the people visiting the now famous site. I started supplying a PA System at the Field of Dreams for background music and as the crowds grew, I supplied wireless microphones so that the Ghost Players could be heard.
The Ghost Players' notoriety grew, and when the Ghost Players were asked to go on the road, I was invited along. During this time, I accumulated hundreds of hours of video, shot in cinema vèritè style; I call it fly on the wall shooting, capturing the story without being noticed or intrusive.
Through the years, the Ghost Players became more than ambassadors for the Field of Dreams, they have become ambassadors for Dyersville, NE Iowa, the Midwest, baseball, and the United States. This documentary will show not only the effects on the Ghost Players, but also the effect the Ghost Players have had on others. The underlying story is about second chances in life.
In order to make this documentary I had to learn the trade. I started video taping for hire, producing corporate training videos, event, and wedding videos. I joined the Iowa Motion Picture Association and the Iowa Screen Writers Association.
I have learned a lot. I have produced some award winning videos. The corporate training video I produced for Kaiser Contract Cleaning won the 2006 award for Excellence by the Iowa Motion Picture Association. I have had my video, called b-roll, shown on most network and cable channels. Some of my footage is featured in the Field of Dreams 15 Year Anniversary DVD.
In order to complete the Documentary about the Ghost Players from the Field of Dreams, I started Dreamcatcher Production, LLC. This has allowed me to offer complete video services and enjoy the work I love.
Artists Recovery Fund
The Artists Recovery Fund is a charitable gift fund started by graduate students at the University of Iowa and assisted by members of the Campaign to Organize Graduate Students (COGS)/UE Local 896 after hearing of the estimated 50-75 students who lost tools, instruments, and artwork in the summer's floods. Affected University of Iowa student artists and musicians will be able to apply for money to replace their tools and instruments starting in January, 2009.
The Artists Recovery Fund Benefit Concert DVD starring Greg Brown and featuring Radoslav Lorkovic was nominated for an award at the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance Innovation and Excellence Awards – the Ickys.
The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA), a group of 150 arts and culture organizations located in the 11-county area around the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor held the 4th Annual Meeting and Excellence in Innovation Awards (aka “The Icky’s!” on the Coe College campus on January 24, 2010.
Greg Brown began his career, in New York City, running hootenannies (folksinger get-togethers) at the legendary Gerdes Folk City Iowa at the young age of 18, and has since, toured with A Prairie Home Companion, has recorded more than a dozen albums and has numerous concert credits to his name. Many have lauded Brown's songwriting, and Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter have performed his songs. Brown was one of a select few A-list singer/songwriters who contributed tracks for the recent Golden Globle and SAG award winning film "Crazy Heart" starring Jeff Bridges.
Brown took the stage with pianist Radoslav Lorkovic during the Artist Recovery Fund Benefit Concert in the fall of 2008. A group of University of Iowa graduate students organized the Artists Recovery Fund to help University of Iowa art and music students who had lost creative work, art-making tools, and musical instruments during the devastating floods of 2008. Since the fund has successfully completed its goal for the UI arts and music students, all proceeds are now going to New Bohemia Group in Cedar Rapids. New Bohemia will use funds raised to help them rebuild their arts community in and around Czech village that was completely devastated by the floods.
Although the Artist Recovery Fund Concert DVD did not get chosen as one of the finalist for the award's ceremony the DVD has garnered praise for the quality audio mastered by Tucker Burnes (of Tucker Burnes Recording). Joe Scherrman filmed the concert. Scherrman and DreamCatcher Production are known for his award-winning documentary, GHOST PLAYER: RELIVE THE MAGIC. Receive the Brown Concert DVD as a gift for your $30, or more, donation. Proceeds go to New Bohemia. Contact DreamCatcher Production: Toll Free 877-423-4740, joescherrman@mac.com or visit E-bay.
